Notes The Mughal emperors ruled India for more than three centuries. Emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605) was the third emperor and had the longest reign and is considered the greatest of all emperors. His biography is known as the Akbarnama (Book of Akbar), an official imperial biography written by the emperor's close friend Abu al-Fadl. He began writing this biography in 1598, and it took him approximately ten years to complete the text. There are two illustrated copies of the text produced during Akbar's lifetime. This version is the last of the two. In the many illustrations that accompany the text, Akbar is depicted as a strong, dynamic person and a great hero, much more than his contemporaries imagined.
