Notes
This piece comes from the interior covering of the Kaaba that was presented by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz (r. 1861-1876) and sent by the Ottomans. It remained inside the Kaaba until 1936, when it was replaced by one made in India. The inner kiswa was later woven in Mecca. The piece has been preserved in sections that represent approximately half the width of the loom and are almost completely vertically repeatable. The last one is made of four winding bands, and in the first wide band there is the phrase “martyrdom,” followed by a narrower band containing expressions of praise to God. The third band contains decorative elements and decorative rings engraved with supplications to God. The last, narrow group contains Surat Al-Baqarah (2), part of verse 144: “We may see the turning of your face in the evening, so We will certainly turn you to a qiblah that will please you, so turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque.”
