Notes
This piece belongs to polychrome ceramics. This type of ceramics became famous in the 6th / 12th century in the area of Raqqa and nearby Rusafa. This piece resembles Iranian "enamel" ceramics in the form of its decoration, but its manufacturing method follows the local method, which places the color under the glaze rather than on top of it. The piece is a bowl with a hemispherical stem, a high base, and its bottom is decorated with the shape of a person (it is not specified whether it is a woman or a man). This person has long hair, a halo surrounding his head, and holds a cup of drink in his right hand. The face is round in the shape of a full moon, with Turkmen features, and there is a mole on the cheek. The dress the person is wearing in the drawing is decorated with embroidery and modified floral decorations, and the person is wearing a small hat. This human figure is surrounded by modified floral decorations, while at the lip of the bowl we find modified geometric decorations. The outside of the bowl is decorated with a band of almond shapes. All of these decorations are executed in blue, black, red, green and brown colors on an ivory basis under a transparent green glaze.
