Notes
A dish with a lobed edge on which the decoration was executed under the glaze. It extends to the edge of the dish, and represents a bouquet of flowers, including blue lavender growing on turquoise branches, and greyish-violet, carnation-like flowers growing from thorny green branches. The flowers appear to have been randomly distributed, but the composition is quite regular. The large blue tulips alternate around the rim of the dish with clusters consisting of a smaller tulip with a spiky turquoise border sandwiched between two violet flowers. This rhythm is only disturbed in one place, the upper right side, where a wavy band takes the place of the tulip. The long floral branches are balanced in the center of the plate by thoughtfully placed flowers. This type of composition represents a transitional phase in Iznik ceramic decoration when the tendency toward ordered compositions composed of serrated leaves and large flowers declined in favor of more natural and free compositions.
