Notes This fabric bears a mesh pattern in the form of an ogival arch with crimson medallions surrounded by woven camouflage bands with ivory cloud scrolls. The medallions contain palmettes, feather-shaped leaves, and natural flowers, a motif regularly found in silk works from the second half of the sixteenth century attributed to Istanbul. Around the middle of that century, the Grand Vizier Rustambasha recognized the city’s weaving workshops with the aim of limiting the import of Italian silk.
