Notes
A wooden panel consisting of a central field and a narrow border. Within the central field is an inscriptional emblem in three parts on an arabesque ground. The titles of Sultan Qaytbay, who ruled in the period 872-901 / 1468-96, occupy the middle part. His name is mentioned at the top and the prayer for victory is at the bottom. The three inscriptions mention the following in the third line: “Sultan King Al-Ashraf (middle) Qaitbay (top) glory be to his victory (bottom).” The central field is surrounded by twisted split palm fronds. Qaitbay was a great patron of arts and architecture, and he ordered the construction of a large number of mosques, avenues, schools, and agencies. It is believed that the tablet was originally located in the agency of Sultan Qaytbay in Cairo, but, without further details, it becomes difficult to attribute this tablet with certainty to the agency.
