Notes
This miniature painting shows the image of a European soldier, which was painted by a Mongolian artist in the seventeenth century. The original image is based on a European print by the Dutch printer Jacques de Gennes (1565-1629). This painting is made with gouache on paper and shows a white-skinned European with blond hair in a European style of clothing holding a long object, perhaps a weapon such as a spear or a pistol. In the margin of the painting is engraved the word “Awal,” perhaps indicating the quality of the painting, and on the back is a print of Mongol seals. Admiration for European prints was common among the Mongol ruling class. Emperors such as Akbar and Janjir who came later were among the collectors of European illustrated editions.
