Notes
Since the 12th century, Granada has been a leading center in the Pyrenees for the production of precious silks, and this expensive lampas silk with gold thread from the 14th century may have been used as interior decoration in one of Granada's palaces. A very similar fabric is known to have been used for interior decoration in the famous Alhambra Palace. The geometric pattern includes favorite Islamic images: octagonal stars, rosettes, braids and floral elements in a specific style. Historians assume the common origin of the cloth decoration with that of the architecture of the era of the Nasiriyah state and, above all, the engraved panels and mosaics of the Alhambra. It is quite rare to find the image of young, double birds perched on the branches of the tree. Perhaps it is supposed to be considered an image of Simorgh (Sinemorph), the sacred king of birds in Iranian and Turkish heritage. Educated Muslims in Spain in the era of the Nasserist state were well versed in the basic narratives in culture in the Near and Mediterranean because of the Arabic translations of books, especially Abu Qasim al-Firdawsi, the author of the Book of Kings (the Shahnameh).
