Notes
According to the inscriptions in the lower left corner of the composition, the artist of the painting is Reza Abbasi, the most prominent Iranian artist of the seventeenth century, the founder of the new style of painting and the head of the Isfahan School. Reza Abbasi violated the bright decorative color approach of classical Persian miniatures and turned to a more sober and unusual color combination. He chose the fine and sensitive calligraphy as his primary means of expression. The drink-server (in Persian, “the bartender”) is a young man who serves at banquets and pours the drink for the guests. The pourer in the shape of a gourd in his right hand indicates his role. The man is depicted wearing a malachite green dress and an orange scarf wrapped carelessly around his shoulders. His full face, his dreamy eyes, the strands of hair falling on his cheeks, his small, light hands, his respectful posture, and the gentle curves that seem to reflect the flexible rows of plants, all fit the traditional type of an effeminate young man (saki).
