Notes
A small decorated glass palm, which may have been sewn together to form a pendant or necklace; It may be attached to a garment or head covering. The main function of the palm is to protect its bearer from the 'evil eye', by warding off harm that thoughts or actions can cause to the wearer. This palm is made of colored glass, after being cast in a mould. Its loop - located at the front of the hand on the palm side - was formed by bending the base of the hand (at the wrist) over itself, and when it is aligned, the fingers of the hand become facing downward. The palm is considered to predate Islam in time, but it has completely integrated into popular Islamic culture, and has been widely used throughout the Middle East and North Africa as a protection talisman. Although the palm is especially prevalent in jewelry, it appears on paper amulets, talismans, fabrics, embroidery works, and municipal buildings.
