Notes
The large metal tray with a wrapped frame depicts a view of Mecca and the Grand Mosque, the scene surrounded by bouquets of flowers on a bright green ground. The piece may have been manufactured in the nineteenth century in Europe for the Ottoman market. This tray model was made with images in the middle showing important sites in Istanbul, which makes this view particularly unique. The depiction of Mecca is clear and striking, and some important sites in the vicinity are also depicted as small buildings and domes, which include the Al-Mu'alla Cemetery (bottom left) and the mosque (top left), which is located in the Cave of Hira at the top of Mount Al-Nour, the place where the revelation was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad at the beginning of the message.
