Notes
This arch was part of a series of arches in the southern portico of the Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza. The group is created from a thirteen-lobed arch, upon which rests a series of small concave arches formed by the intersection of other larger, also lobed arches. The upper part is decorated with stylized floral decoration, interrupted by four small domes. The group is topped with a large arch, which appears to be supported by columns with their bodies and capitals. This piece enables us to notice once again the way in which some of the structural elements (arches, columns or small domes) were treated as mere decorative elements; It is a common artistic practice in the Taifa kingdoms. These realistic interlacings of small arches, obtained from the symmetrical reproduction of all types of arches, create a distinct atmosphere of shadow and light; It is an art that gives more importance to theoretical effect than to materials and architecture itself. The artistic forms of this period follow the controversial tendencies of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, but in the Taifa Kingdom of Zaragoza they reflect a special taste for Baroque models that would later be used by Andalusian and Mudéjar art.
