Notes
Amman was conquered in 13/634 by the leader Yazid bin Abi Sufyan. In the Umayyad era, Amman became the capital of Balqa, which was administratively affiliated with the Jund Damascus. In this period, the Umayyad complex or emirate complex was built on top of the Citadel Mountain. The emirate's administration consisted of several buildings and facilities, including the mosque, the bathroom, the market, and nine residential units, in addition to the building belonging to the governor of Balqa, his family, and his servants. Thus, the complex contained all the architectural elements that make up an Islamic city. The presence of Amman near Damascus, the capital of the Umayyads, and its location on the route of caravans of merchants and pilgrims, led to the prosperity of Amman, especially since the tribes that were descending on Balqa were known for their loyalty and support for the Umayyad rule. At the beginning of the year 749 AD, Amman was exposed to a violent earthquake that led to the demolition of most of its buildings and facilities. One year after this shock, the Abbasids were able to overthrow the Umayyad regime and seize power, so the capital of the new dynasty moved to Iraq. With the transfer of the capital, Amman lost some of its political importance and gradually began to wither. In the 8th / 14th century, Amman became a ruin consisting of ruined and abandoned buildings. In 1879, Circassians who had left their homeland in the Caucasus began to settle in Amman with the help of the Ottoman authority. In 1921, the Emirate of Transjordan was established with the arrival of Abdullah bin Al Hussein, the son of the leader of the Great Arab Revolt, beginning a new chapter in the history of Amman and Jordan.
