Notes
A pair of blue and white ceramic candlesticks under a matching glaze. It is not customary for this form of candlesticks to be made of porcelain, as it is derived from metal pieces that were produced for the Italian market. The slanted sides of one of the candlesticks are decorated with oval medallions interspersed with floral decorations, while the sides of the body of the second candlestick are decorated with undulating spiral leaflets. The bases of the two candlesticks are decorated with floral decorations, while the stands are distinguished by blue and white stripes with a row of flowers around their tops. The wavy leaf is considered one of the distinctive elements of blue and white pottery dating back to this period. The origin of Iznik pottery, which began with blue and white, goes back to Chinese porcelain. These two candlesticks were produced during the rule of Sultan Suleiman (926-73/1520-66) when the ceramic industry flourished in Iznik.
