Notes During the 19th century European centers of glass production, particularly those in France and Bohemia, made works in the Islamic style of art that would be exported to countries such as Egypt, Syria, Iran and India. The DDFIA collection includes many examples of such European glass and this bottle – one of a set of three – was almost certainly produced for despatching to Iran, as it features portraits of the Qajar Shah Nasr al-Din (r. 1848-96). It was purchased in 1959.
