Notes The commonly known Qur'an/Qur'an box hirz (necklace) has religious significance as its main feature is the rectangular or cylindrical box in which protective verses from the Holy Qur'an are preserved. Qur'an boxes can be strung by silver chains or rope or displayed as part of a much larger necklace as seen here with silver beads, coins and amulet pendants. Smaller boxes are also used for hair decoration and placed in headdresses.
