Notes The slab has a rectangular (almost square) shape and is decorated with a large cobalt blue Persian inscription set against a background of thick, brightly painted decoration of flower scrolls, leaves, arabesques, birds and hares. Above and around the frame are relief palm leaves in the form of repeating bands. The slab formed part of a magnificent frieze on the walls of the Ilkhanid Palace from the beginning of the fourteenth century. The art of lustrous painting on ceramics was perfected by Iranian potters in Kashan in the 12th century. The technique involves using a mineral-based glaze on a baked and glazed vessel.
