Notes This painting is from George Sale's translation of the Qur'an. This version of Salle's work was published in two volumes in 1825 by Thomas Tegg, without an editorial or acknowledgment from the translator, and which forms a large part of Salle's original translation of 1734. The 1734 edition was the first English translation of the Qur'an from the Arabic original. This painting is the same as that of the 1734 edition and consists of two images: a plan of the Holy Mosque in Mecca and a view of the Mosque in Mecca. There is a clear explanation of the main parts of the sanctuary and a note stating that the references for both the plan and the view show the same locations. But this plan lacks the signature of the original engraver A.Motte. Light hand-colouring is commonly seen in Tegg publishing but it is rare to find this particular plate from an engraved and very nicely colored manqara. It may have been removed, colored, and used as a work of art in itself.
