Library Location The palace, which currently houses the corridors of the National Museum of Arts and Popular Heritage, is located in the lower Kasbah, at No. 9 of Malek and Mohamed Akli Street, Algiers, Algeria.
Date 1203 AH / 1789 AD
Notes The date of construction of the building is not known, and it is believed that the palace was built on top of an old corner dating back to the 8th century AH / 15th century AD. The Dey's Minister of Finance, Muhammad ibn Uthman, bought this building in 1203 AH / 1789 AD, for his blind daughter, Khadouj. The entrance opens into a first shed and then a second shed lengthwise, surrounded by arches with opposing arches resting on rows of three columns, thus forming a series of side niches. The roof of this large shed consists of perpendicular vaults. After that, we reach a small courtyard surrounded by rooms used for housing, but they appear to belong to a house separate from this palace. The staircase leads to the upper level of the palace, which opens onto the courtyard, which is surrounded by corridors that lead to large rooms, one of which, which is extraordinarily large, has been paid for. Gulfan said that a change had been made to it to transform it into a dining hall. The upper floor offers the same layout, including the surprising capacity of one of the rooms.
