Notes
The bowl has a heavy body, a slightly concave base, and its center is filled with a lattice pattern with a braided curved band forming six circles. It is connected to a central circle decorated with a kufic-like inscription, the vegetal circles alternately filled with the same kufic-like inscription, and a lattice pattern with green and yellow dots. The outer walls of the bowl are decorated with black lines. The decoration depicted on this bowl is related to a complete group found in Nishapur, where arrangements of floral decorations in the form of circles painted in black, yellow, and green are the common motif. Based on extensive excavations conducted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in eastern Persia, Nishapur was a center of well-designed polychrome pottery made during the Islamic era, but vessels of this type with a Kufic-like pattern appear to be rare.
