Notes
This painting depicts a calligrapher or scholar, wearing a white turban and a red beard dyed with henna. He is sitting in the corner of a simple room, absent-mindedly, holding the mouth of his smoking pipe in his hand. To his left at the top of the box are some personal items including a pair of glasses, a silver pocket watch, a pencil case, a book, and a small glass vase containing a bouquet of daffodils. We know almost nothing about the painter Mirza Aqa mentioned in the poem accompanying this portrait. The distinctive features of this work are due in particular to the pictorial characteristics used by the painter. The faithful portrayal of the rough face gives the character a strong, penetrating presence. The play with perspective, shadow, light and realism shown by the painter can be found in other contemporary Qajar painters.
