Notes
This round molded can has a flat lid in the center that is a deep circular recess. The dense grooved decoration consists of eight-pointed stars, floral elements and a frieze with superimposed split leaves. The four decorative elements on the frame contain verses by the 14th century Persian poet, Hafez, which glorify the flame of eternal love and compare it to the flame of a candle. What is typical for Safavid metalwork is the stylized decoration, which is reminiscent of manuscript illustrations.
