Notes
The belt is a patterned band that surrounds the top of the Kaaba. During the Ottoman era, it was made of eight parts - two on each wall - and this section is for the southern part. It is embroidered with Surah Al-Imran (3), verses 95-97, and the text refers to the religion of Abraham, “Indeed, the first house appointed for the people is the one in Bakkah” and the shrine of Abraham. The kiswa and its many elements have been supplied annually, with few exceptions, since the Fatimid era. The incident that took place in Mina during the Hajj in 1926 led to a break in the relationship between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. As the Hajj season approached the following year without a kiswah arriving from Egypt, King Abdul Aziz requested one to be made in the kiswah workshop in Mecca. Because of the short time frame, the belt from which this piece was made had to be embroidered on a machine.
