Notes
Qatrana Castle was one of the important stops on the Hajj-Shami route. The site includes a rectangular castle measuring 22.20 m x 17.35 m, and a square pool with a side length of 70 m. The height of the surrounding walls is about 10 m, topped with terraced balconies, and they are equipped with arrows and ratchets that protrude 50 cm from the height of the walls. The entrance hall above the entrance has an arched window and two narrow openings on the sides, while the other two openings each have one narrow opening on each of its three sides. The entrance, which is preceded by a portico in the southern wall, opens and leads to a room roofed with intersecting vaults, then to a corridor surmounted by elongated basalt slabs overlooking a rectangular courtyard measuring 18.60 m x 4.10 m, surrounded by eight rooms. On the eastern side of the courtyard, there is a set of stairs leading to the upper floor, which consists of seven rooms led by a corridor. Two types of stones were used in building the castle: limestone and basalt stones. The facades of the walls, inside and out, were covered with a layer of plaster.
