Notes
The piece is an inkwell richly decorated with arabesques and inscriptions consisting of verses in Persian and Arabic in Nasta'liq script. At the bottom there is the signature of the craftsman Mirak Hussein Yazdi and the Arabic poetic verses containing an invocation of Ali, the Prophet’s cousin, which relate to the Shiite environment in which the piece was produced. It is one of the best known signed works of Persian metalwork from the era of Shah Ismail (1501-1524).
