Notes
The ewer provides a particular example of late twelfth century and early thirteenth century AD inlaid brassware from Khorasan (northwestern Iran). The ewer has a 12-sided body with a flat bottom (possibly made later), a high cylindrical neck with two raised lions on either side of the pourer, and a simple ring-shaped handle. On the shoulders of the ewer there are 12-pointed relief rosettes with fishes between the ends. The surface of the faces of the body is decorated with three bands of decoration. At the top is a row of medallions in human figures, perhaps representing musicians (they are largely obscured). At the bottom is an inscription of wishful expressions addressed to the ewer’s owner: “Glory, success, leadership, happiness, exaltation, providence...” At the bottom is a large band of medallions in the form of representing The twelve signs of the zodiac and the decorative elements include a floral arabesque background, linked by silver inlay (partially missing) and contrasting black filling. There is also illegible writing in kufic script on the neck.
