Notes
From the time of the construction of the Great Mosque complex of Suleiman in Istanbul (957-964 AH / 1550-1557 AD) and thereafter, tiles with Iznik inscription were increasingly used to decorate Ottoman religious monuments. Stencils were used to transfer the designs of both engraved and illustrated tile formations, but this inscription appears not to have been made by one of the many professional calligraphers who flourished under the Ottomans, but could be the work of a very skilled amateur. The Arabic text says “This world is paving the way to the other world.” It seems that it is an incorrect hadith and perhaps a famous saying or a verse from the Qur’an (Surat Ash-Shu’ara’: 20)
