Notes
The base of this large candlestick is decorated with six perched lions in large relief and is truly an incomparable piece of Iranian or eastern Anatolian hunting scenes. The body of the piece is made of a single sheet of metal and the decoration is highly embossed using the technique of hammering on both sides. The exquisite treatment of the faces of the animals and the patterns of mane hair, fur and small spirals between the shapes indicate that this piece belongs to an important person. On the shoulders between the heads of the animals there is an Arabic inscription with traditional wishes: “Prosperity, success, sovereignty and happiness to its owner.” The base is designed to stand on a floor and hold a single candle. The lion is an ancient Iranian symbol of royal and personal greatness, the authority and victory of the ruler, and in the context of horoscopes, it is directly related to the sun.
