Notes
The exquisite calligraphy – with beautiful deep curves – used to transcribe this page of the Qur’an is known as Maghribi from the Arabic word Maghrib, which means west. Morocco is the name that traditionally refers to the western parts of the Islamic world, which previously consisted not only of North Africa but of Islamic Spain. The calligraphy is copied in gold ink framed in black on parchment.
