Notes
The poet Ferdowsi completed his famous epic known as the Shahnameh (Book of Kings) in 1010 AD. The Shahnameh is considered the national epic in Iran and is about sixty thousand verses related to the stories of the heroes and kings of Iran from the dawn of time until the Islamic conquest of the country in the middle of the seventh century. These pages belong to one of three manuscripts collectively known as the Small Shahamat. None of them bears a date, but it is generally believed that they were produced around the year 1300, making them the oldest illustrated Shahnameh manuscripts in existence. (There are also three copies of the Shahnameh dating back to the thirteenth century that are not illustrated.) However, there are older pieces (mainly ceramic) decorated with scenes from different stories that constitute the Shahnameh.
