| Notes | The fortifications are located on the top of a hill overlooking the Aljezur River, which was previously navigable to the sea. It is close to a land communication route with the lower Alentejo region, and is surrounded by a lagoon within a valley of fertile, well-irrigated land. Alkhizur Palace occupies an area measuring 57 by 54 metres. The building takes the form of a polygonal plan, with its entrance facing north, and protected by a semicircular fort. The fortress wall contains two towers with a quadrangular plan, which appear to have been added to the construction at a later stage. The fortification wall was also built with crystalline stone extracted from quarries in the same area. Inside the palace, we notice the presence of a tank dating back to an unspecified period. |
