Notes
The cross is considered a religious symbol in Christianity. The importance of belief in him is demonstrated by the governor of the Gudea region crucifying Jesus Christ on a large wooden cross. Since then, the cross has become an essential tool used in rituals and religious occasions. The cross shown here is made of bronze, and small concentric circles are engraved on both sides. The three small holes on the vertical part of the cross indicate that it was mounted on a piece of wood used for church ritual purposes. The upper part of the arm of the cross was broken into two pieces and was recently restored. The importance of this cross lies in its finding in the Church of St. Stephen (Stephen) in Umm al-Rasas. This church was paved with mosaics in 138/756, as indicated by the inscriptions on either side of the altar. This indicates the existence of an active Christian community in Umm al-Rasas six years after the end of the Umayyad period and for a century during Islamic rule in the region.
