Notes
The pews of the Monastery of Saint Clare are of a huge type. The four units housed in the National Archaeological Museum formed part of a group that originally included fifty benches; The remaining forty-six pews are currently located in the San Diego Mission (USA). The wood structure and painted decoration are prominent; The parts were assembled in such a way that the nailed elements were few in number. The color gamut is also traditional; With a predominance of shades of pink, dark red, teal, white and yellow green, painted on a solid white lacquer, it creates a dazzling visual result. The architectural scene of the work, with its octagonal columns, small lobed arches, cupboards and cornice, gives the collection an air of grandeur. It is the oldest example in Spain of a high chair: it was completed around 1353, the date on which María de Padilla, mistress of King Pierre I, founded the convent, as confirmed by the emblems with seven-seeds erected on its hind feet and the small shovels of fire, which are the symbol of María de Padilla.
