Notes This ring of spin-cut rock crystal was made for Shah Tahmasp. Seals were widely used in Safavid consulates and were used for a wide variety of purposes. It was often re-excavated and for security reasons was eventually disposed of. There is an inscription expressing the Shiite faith in the lobed decorative elements in the corner, while the names of God, Muhammad and Ali with the date of the year 963 are on the sides. The Shah’s name and title, “Servant of His Majesty the King,” occupies the central region. The inscriptions confirm the link between Shiism and the ruling Safavid family.
