Notes
Inside this box remained individual pages of the Granada Qur’an stitched in brown, black, red and white leather. Two leather bindings without mantle spine 1172 sheets of loose paper. Floral and geometric patterns in red and yellow ink surround the verse in Arabic calligraphy. The Mudéjars and Moriscos read and wrote the scriptures in Arabic and Spanish as distinct interpretations of the Qur'an. Since the forced expulsion of the Muslims in the 15th century, very few complete Qur'an specimens still exist from Andalusia. While Arabic calligraphy expresses religious devotion as the secular form of the Word of God, the gradual disappearance of Islamic schools in the Iberian Peninsula limited Muslim access to the study of Arabic.
