Notes
This copper print depicts a ceremonial bear in procession from Cairo to Mecca during the month of Hajj. The mahmal is a tent-like cloth that covers camel droppings and carries the new kiswa given over the Kaaba. Dated 1729 in Leiden, Dutch publisher Pieter van der A printed this illustration of a religious caravan that was traveling to Saudi Arabia with Muslim pilgrims. The image brings the Hajj to life, and posters refer to individual items, including the leader and his wife being carried inside the palanquin. As worshipers around the world apply for Hajj visas, this print reflects the importance of the Hajj for Dutch Muslims today, while contemporary exhibitions in the Netherlands commemorate this pillar of Islam.
