Notes
From the 5th century onwards, lacquer pieces - including bookbindings, pen cases and cases - such as this one - gained popularity in Iran, reaching their peak in the 19th century. They are made of papier maché, and sometimes of wood, and pieces of lacquer. They are decorated with small drawings of common shapes, such as flower patterns, birds, and royal scenes, before being varnished, which protects the drawings and adds a pleasing amber glow. This box is decorated with beautifully drawn animal scenes dating back to the beginnings of paintings in Persian manuscripts. The lid depicts an archer with the central figure aiming his bow at the nape, which ends with the head of a dragon. This image has been known for a long time in Iran.
