Notes
A newspaper with a protective cover belonging to the Tondi family in Siena, Italy. Its center is surrounded by arrays of brilliant vachera flowers (those with blue petals and metallic-hued sepals), alternating with arrays of 'parsley'-like leaves (those similar to serrated clover leaves), all braided with elongated, metallic luster leaflets of the fern. This type of newspaper belongs to a distinctive style that was very sought after in Spain and other regions of Europe, where it was exported in large quantities. This explains the presence of the Italian family's name on the lid, because this type of luster ware was very popular in Italy. Manises was one of the main pottery manufacturing cities in Valencia, and it played a pioneering role in the manufacture of luster ware for export to Europe, primarily to France and Italy. Manises pottery was prepared for export via the port of Groa in Valencia, where many of Manises potters had warehouses and shops. These potters were a mixture of Christians and Moroccans (Muslims), but the latter were not allowed to practice their craft outside the city, and this is evidence of the distinct importance of their skills in the economy of Manises. By 956 / mid-16th century, Maneses had become the main monopolist of lustreware products in Valencia.
