Notes
The silhouetted images of four distinct birds separated by Chinese-inspired floral motifs have a border of rice grain holes and are largely considered to be distinctly Chinese but are in fact rooted in Persian pottery. The piece is covered with transparent glass and the holes serve to consolidate the expression of the flight of birds, which constitute the decorative element, while the fish and wavy aquatic plants at the bottom of the bowl show a scene with paradisiacal expressions in Islamic art. The underglaze in my shade of blue and the elegant painting and porcelain paste show that the vessel dates back to the 17th century. The Chinese-influenced blue and white decoration is taken from Safavid pottery, which remained very popular in Iran until the end of the nineteenth century.
