Notes
This high-quality woven fabric can be dated on the basis of technique and design dating back to the early years of the classical era of Ottoman lampas (kemha) silk in the 1550s when state-encouraged weavers and designers were proving their abilities in competition with Italian silk weavers. The small size of the special-style blooming flowers, their precise drawing, and their symmetrical arrangement are all indications of the early date of fabric making. Fabrics of this type exported to Western and Central Europe were transformed into costumes and church clothes, and the Mass suit was the most common type, which included both (kameh) cloth and Ottoman velvet. The two halves of the other end of this Mass robe are in the Textile Museum in Washington, DC, number 1.51 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, number 08.109.24.
