Notes
This rug belongs to the Gordes carpet group, a village between Izmir and Uşak, where most Anatolian prayer rugs were manufactured during the 12th and 13th/18th and 19th centuries. In the central field is a pointed mihrab with a half-mihrab on either side on a buttery ground. The triangular-arched mihrab pattern is derived from the decoration of Ottoman carpets produced in court during the 10th and 11th / 16th and 17th centuries. The columns on this carpet rest on bases in the form of abstract carnations, in contrast to the original design. They are surrounded by trefoil flowers and carry the main mihrab and separate it from the two halves of the mihrab. The spaces above the arch are filled with abstract carnations on a dark blue background. From the closure of the arch hangs a large bouquet of flowers that reaches almost to the bottom where a row of carnations appear. The panel above the arch is filled with florets and ornaments. The frame is formed by two horizontal and two vertical bands bearing endless decorations of abstract plants on a dark blue ground. The wavy design of alternating colored flowers in blue, red and light brown is repeated on the inner and outer frames.
