Notes
The story of Soz and Godaz (Burning and Melting) is an allegorical poetic romance that narrates the soul's longing for God through the story of an Indian woman who, according to the custom known as sati, ended her life on her husband's funeral pyre. The poet Muhammad Reza, known as Banawi (died in 1619), who was born in Khabushan in northeastern Iran, traveled to India, where he composed this poetry for Prince Daniel, son of the Mughal Emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). The three paintings shown here depict fire worship, the young man telling his father about his beloved, and the two lovers sitting in a garden with a servant standing near them.
