Notes
This slab belongs to the era of Timurid rule in Iran and Central Asia (771-913 AH / 370-1507 AD). The great and last ruling dynasty to emerge from the steppes of Central Asia, the Timurids, sponsored the erection of buildings that were often erected on a huge scale and covered with a wonderful decorative covering of bright glazed tiles. Since the main structural material was dark colored baked bricks, the glazed tiles gave the colorful decoration. The floral design elements of this tile were cut from glazed tiles of different colors and assembled as a mosaic. They were placed in place on the exterior of the building where they were joined with other parts to form a larger part of a more complex design. In fact, there are several almost identical or related tiles in other museum collections in Berlin (MIA), Chicago (AIC) and Paris (MdL).
