Notes
This flask was formed in two parts and then joined together and re-polished on the Al-Fakhouri / potter's wheel, leaving a perfect horizontal band. The lower part includes a base and the upper part is completed by a neck bearing traces of a wheel. The lower part is decorated with a row of schematic medallions followed by a single medallion showing a group of quadrupeds on either side of the central double letter “Lam Alif”. The medal is printed three times but can represent the owner's name. Description of the special style Ibex is a common motif on molded pottery from Lashkari Bazaar and the upper part contrasts with the precision of the schematic medallions on the lower part of the body of the flask. Flasks of similar gray composition, size and design, especially the specially styled Ibāl, were found in Merv and are considered to date back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Apart from that, molded flasks and jugs were found in almost all excavated cities in Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan in layers dating back to the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The most important archaeological trove of molded jugs is from Bazaarlashkari. The widespread production of this type of pottery in more than 40 workshops within Central Asia so far shows its popularity among various ceramic production techniques.
