Notes
An Iznik ceramic plate decorated with cruciform arrangements of red, blue and green floral garlands surrounding a central star and alternating with arabesque arches. The outer edge of the folio is decorated with Chinese-style waves and swirled borders. The bright red color on the plate (and painted under the glaze) has a distinct appearance and appears somewhat radiant. This is what gives Iznik newspapers, such as this one, a distinctive character. This plate belongs to the third phase of the Iznik ceramic industry, which lasted from 956 to 1111 / 1550 to 1700, and witnessed the development of new techniques. Such as underglaze paint and a wide variety of colors, such as the bright red (the color of tomato), known as Armenian-red brown. Iznik wares of this period became so popular in many regions of the Ottoman Empire and some parts of Europe that European scholars mistakenly attributed them, for a long time, to potters living on the island of Rhodes. The main reason for this is the widespread use of Iznik sheets to decorate the walls of homes in Rhodes, thus creating the false impression that ceramic industries are locally produced.
