Notes
Golistan (The Rose Garden) is a special work consisting of moral stories, proverbs, and anecdotes written in the middle of the thirteenth century by the poet Saadi. There are many copies of this book and other texts by Saadi that were produced throughout the Persian-speaking world, including Mughal India, and this in particular is a copy of Gulistan made for the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1627-58). However, the paintings differ from the general style of Mughal paintings in that they are placed horizontally and that the figures in them have clearly large heads and small bodies. In 1638, the manuscript was sent as a gift to King Charles I of England. It was later rebound (in red velvet) by King George IV, who then sent it in 1826 to Shah Fath Ali Shah in Iran.
