Notes
A large ceramic bowl with a high base, made of quartz paste, and decorated with a group of leafy and floral elements under a layer of glaze. The colors used are manganese, green, blue, and black. The outer rim of the bowl is surrounded by serrated leaves known as saz, a fancy motif popular in Iznik ceramics during the 1030s, 40s, and 50s of the 10th century / AD 1550s. Inside, an interesting design is made of medallions containing wavy decoration sandwiched between clusters of blue sepals. This striking bowl, with its brightly colored design, was most likely made for the royal court, and may have been for washing the feet of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent himself, who ruled 926-73 / 1520-66. This bowl with a base represents an example of ceramics made during the 1030s, 1540s, and 1550s, generally known as the “Damascus” group, as it was believed to be the source. It was later proven that the “Damascus” collection arose from Iznik designs, which were characterized by a set of specifications, most notably the introduction of specific colors such as olive, black, and manganese violet, and the use of leaves known as saz and imaginary flowers.
