Notes
A multi-colored underglaze dish with a sloping edge and a deep bottom, in the center of which appears the figure of a man outlined in black on a white ground. The man wears wide, colorless trousers, a pale blue jacket, and a white shirt with green sleeves. His hat, shoes, and the flower he holds in his right hand are all colored pale red. Five flowers on slanting branches fill the space around the man, including two blue ones dotted with red, of the lavender type, and three smaller red ones. On the edge appear broken patterns of almond-shaped leaves. The triangular area is colored light blue alternating with bright green, and filled with semi-florets with red dots in the middle. The back of the dish is decorated with three large blue dots under a transparent layer of turquoise glaze, and the ring-shaped base shows traces of a hole used to hang the dish. The figurative decorations on Iznik ceramics were inspired by popular images of miniatures, most of which were produced for sale in Europe from the beginning of the eleventh century / seventeenth century. The reason for the use of a uniform depiction of a man and the general shape of flowers is due to the large quantities of production that were pumped into the general market.
