Notes
On this Iranian carpet, the symbol of Zoroaster stands at the top, while Darius I, known as Darius the Great of Persia, sits on a throne raised by eight men. The Achaemenid Empire, as a pyramid-like hierarchy, ruled over eight states of the ancient world. These lands include Lydia, Babylon, Persia, Palestine, Egypt, Sindh, Libya, and Macedonia. The carpet depicts a human being with the body and wings of a bird, signifying closeness to God, and divine protection. Colorful patterns featuring the Damask rose form the central scene with earthy tones representing honesty, support and trustworthiness. This rug originates from Kerman, a region known for its wide range of designs, using natural dyes in a wide color palette and asymmetrical knots.
