Notes The beauty of this piece of textile comes from the repeated design of large medallions, and the balanced use of only three colours. A fine silver arabesque fills the center of each medallion, which is surrounded by a lobed border of red silk. It follows a row of alternating circles in red and silver, and this interior design is surrounded by a broken line. The outer frame consists of red trefoils and leaves framed on a gilded ground. The skill of the craftsman can be inferred from the small silver dot that emphasizes the center of each trefoil. This piece of brocade is part of a larger piece that was used as the front cover of an altar. Many of the textile pieces used for religious purposes and made in Sweden included fabric imported from Persia and Turkey.
